Mother’s Day Reflections
What turns a woman into a Tiger Mom?
Mother’s Day can be stressful for various reasons. Being bombarded by the omnipresent images of happy women receiving flowers saddens some because they are childless by circumstance or choice. While smiling valiantly, some mothers feel anxiety and inadequacy in this daunting role. And, some of us dread the mandatory phone call or visit because we still harbor unresolved issues with our mothers.
Like many Americans, I have perennially ambivalent feelings about Mother’s Day. Even though I understand the human need to appreciate giving and receiving maternal love, I frown upon its commercialization. Why is it that on one particular day of the year, even creative people are manipulated and coerced into expressing love in the most socially acceptable way—giving mothers things money can buy?
Nevertheless, I feel less cynical this year. First, I’m a new mother of a debut novel, and I’m buoyed by some welcoming news: The Moon Goddess’s Smile has been Amazon’s #1 New Release in Historical Chinese Fiction. Secondly, nothing makes an author happier than hearing from the readers that they find the book entertaining and/or educational. Not long ago, one reader told me that reading this novel not only helped him better understand Chinese society, but also solved a long-standing puzzle in his mind: why are there so many Chinese Tiger Moms? Or, what turns a Chinese woman into a Tiger Mom?
If you are intrigued by these similar questions, you will find hints and answers in my book, a hybrid of Historical and Contemporary Women’s Literature. Three generations of strong and flawed mother figures play star roles in this character-driven novel.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me give birth to this novel and nurture it by buying and reading the book, writing positive reviews, and spreading the word among friends and on social media. I’ll be forever indebted to you for all your help bringing the book to a broader reader base.
